Five ways
to finish a floor

Look, odour, durability, maintenance: each finish trades one for another. Here is the whole picture, side by side, before you choose.

Oil-based finishes
Amber, satin to semi-gloss

Oil-based finishes

Finishes containing oil-based alkyds with the addition of urethanes provide a reasonably good abrasion resistance. A strong odour is prevalent during application, but this dispels as the floor dries. These finishes provide a subdued, satin to semi-gloss appearance.

Polyurethane finishes

Polyurethane finishes

Solvent-based polyurethanes such as Feast Watson Maxithane or Polycure Durapol (moisture-cured and two-component) provide a very durable finish, greatly reducing the level of routine maintenance required. A strong odour is prevalent during application but dispels as the finish dries.

Water-based finishes

Water-based finishes

The latest high-quality water-based coatings, such as Bona Traffic HD, are not only non-toxic but offer superior durability. They make a fantastic alternative to oil-based finishes, as water-based coatings do not yellow with age.

Hard wax

Hard wax

Products like Treatex Hardwax Oil provide a superb natural look to the timber. They let the timber breathe, allowing for movement to occur, and there is minimal odour during and after the application.

Penetrating oil
The most natural look of all

Penetrating oil

Arguably an oil-finished floor provides the most natural look of any wood floor finish. The oil penetrates and becomes part of the surface of the floor, and as it hardens, products such as Loba Impact Oil provide very good protection.

What actually decides the finish

The right coating is the one that matches how you live in the room. These are the five variables we work through with you, sample in hand, before anything is applied.

  • 01Durability and abrasion resistance in the traffic the room really gets
  • 02Odour during application, and how long before the house is comfortable
  • 03Whether the finish yellows with age, or holds its colour
  • 04Ongoing maintenance, and how easily the floor can be recoated later
  • 05Gloss level, from ultra-matte through lustre and satin to high gloss
