Finishes containing oil-based alkyds with the addition of urethanes provide a reasonably good abrasion resistance. A strong odour is prevalent during application, but this dispels as the floor dries. These finishes provide a subdued, satin to semi-gloss appearance.
Solvent-based polyurethanes such as Feast Watson Maxithane or Polycure Durapol (moisture-cured and two-component) provide a very durable finish, greatly reducing the level of routine maintenance required. A strong odour is prevalent during application but dispels as the finish dries.
The latest high-quality water-based coatings, such as Bona Traffic HD, are not only non-toxic but offer superior durability. They make a fantastic alternative to oil-based finishes, as water-based coatings do not yellow with age.
